Ashton Apartments

Printer-friendly version

The two-story brick apartment building located at 901-905 Ogden Street was built in 1945 according to permit number 8559. Owned by Swan A. Anderson and built by his son, contractor Arlo Anderson, the building was estimated to cost $40,000 to construct. The apartments were called the S.A. Anderson Apartments from their opening until at least 1979 but are known today as the Ashton Apartments.

As college students in 1972-1974, my first husband and I were the managers of this building. It had a major rose garden that had not been cared for and was overgrown with weeds, so we dug them all up, trimmed the tops and the roots and created fresh flowerbeds with fertilizer before replanting all those many rose bushes. The next season the roses were amazing. (All the seniors who lived there were furious with us for pursuing this project until they saw the results.)
