834-836 N Marion St.

Printer-friendly version

The duplex at 834-836 Marion Street was built in 1906 for owner William J. Goetzen. Goetzen worked as a buyer in the shoe department of the Daniels and Fischer department store.  Born in 1863 in Wisconsin, Goetzen was married to wife Mollie, a native of New York, c.1889. The couple had one daughter, Janet, born in 1890 in Colorado. William died of pneumonia a few years after the home was constructed, and the deed was transferred to Mollie and Janet. The Goetzens lived in one side of the duplex (834) while renting out the other side (836).  Janet Goetzen was a talented musician, often in Denver newspapers for her involvement in local musical events. She married prominent Denver attorney William H. Ferguson in 1915. The 1916 Denver city directory shows that, while retaining ownership of 834-836 Marion, the Goetzens were now renting out both sides of the duplex.
