1850-1854 Race St.

Printer-friendly version

An 1890 permit (#851) allowed for the construction of 1850-1854 Race Street, a two-story double brick dwelling on lots 15 and 16 of McCullough’s Second Addition. The permit lists Mrs. A. B. Turner as owner, and J. H. Phillips as architect and builder. The cost to construct the home was $5000.

A. B. Turner was likely Agnes B. Turner, wife of Decimus “Dess” Arthur Turner. The 1885 Colorado census shows the Turner family living at 184 Race Street, possibly the former address of this property. Agnes and D. Arthur are shown living at the house with their children William, Jessie, Newton, and Charles. D. Arthur listed as working at a dry goods store as a clerk. Dess died in 1886, and is buried at Riverside cemetery. The 1890 permit suggests that this duplex replaced a prior residence. City directories from 1892-1895 show William, Mrs. D. A., and Newton R. Turner living at 1854 Race Street. Both William and Newton worked for the Daniels and Fisher department store, William as an inspector and Newton as a clerk. By 1896, the Turners were no longer listed at this property.
